College Students in Breadlines: Broke and Hungry in 2010

by bill.muhlenfeld on January 8, 2010

I ran across this vid just after my son called from CU Boulder, fretting about his finances, probing as to whether he should “boomerang” back home for a bit.   Though he works at a bar part time, business is down, and  the hours he can work allow  him to barely scrape by.  While it’s tough to hear your kid under stress, at bottom I feel it is a good life-long lesson.

My response?  Get a second job.

I’m going through college right now and I know exactly how your son feels. My parents haven’t been helping me pay for any of my college - including tuition - so it’s a little scary being here by myself.

If he wants some easy cash without much work put in to it, I would suggest that he try getting a job at a church. I did that a few months ago and now I get about $150 more each month for spending two hours every Sunday watching kids. I also get more for the more activities that I do. It’s a great way to earn some extra cash.

Love your blog, though! Even if it’s for parents and not students. :0]
